UNIDO and IEEPA Jointly Held the 4th WEC Press Conference in Beijing

On May 12, 2011, United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and International Ecological Economy Promotion Association(IEEPA), co-organizers of the 4th World Economic and Environmental Conference (the 4th WEC), along with host Qingdao Municipal government, held a joint press conference and Forum on the Development of Low-Carbon Eco-Cities in Beijing. This activity was hosted by Jon Li, Secretary-General and Secretary General of Consultative Council of IEEPA.

First, Zhang Qiong, Deputy Director of the Subcommittee of Social and Legal Affairs of CPPCC, Senior Consultant of IEEPA Consultative Council, former Deputy Director of the State Council Legislative Affairs Office, and Wei Jianguo, member of top-level think tank of Chinese government, Secretary-General of China Center for International Economic Exchanges (CCIEE), former Minister of Ministry of Commerce, made a keynote speech respectively. This was followed by Edward Clarence-smith, Representative of UNIDO in China, Mongolia, DPRK and ROK, and co-organizer of the 4th WEC, and Wu Tiejun, Assistant to Mayor of the People 's Government of Qingdao Municipality, officer of host city, and Andrea De Angelis, Senior Climate Change Advisor of UNDP in China, Walter Meyer, Development Counsellor of Embassy of Switzerland to China, as well as Liu Runhui, Senior Green Building Expert of NRDC, delivered speeches respectively and attended the forum dialogue.

This activity, on the one hand, announced and introduced the topic, relevant subjects and forums of the 4th WEC. On the other hand, it paid close attention to the advancement of China¡¯s economic transition and industrial structuring, especially major challenges China¡¯s medium-sized cities faced in economic growth. Additionally the forum on the Development of Low-Carbon Eco-Cities, titled ¡°trends and practices of urban transformation and development under climate change¡±, was also held. The dialogue guests, mainly from UN, Chinese government, foreign embassies in China, foreign city delegations, made warm discussion on the forum title, brought audience a rare opportunity to share experience with UN and other nations in the field of low-carbon urban construction. In addition, the dialogue guests also discussed relevant topics like demonstration construction, technology popularization and international cooperation for China¡¯s low-carbon eco-cities, etc.

This activity gave the public a bird¡¯s eye view on the 4th WEC. Also it made efforts to establish an international cooperation bridge, encouraging all walks of life to jointly seek transformation and development trends under climate change, as well as action roadmap, planning and practice in China's transition towards low-carbon eco-cities.
